Scotland feels disadvantaged after 1-0 against Morocco: missed two penalties and red card?

Scotland lost 1-0 to Morocco in Boston after an early goal from Ismael Saibari. The Scots claimed two penalties (McGinn and McTominay) and only saw Issa Diop get booked after a foul on Che Adams. Opinions about Ilgiz Tantashev's arbitration varied.

Scotland feels shortchanged after the 1-0 defeat to Morocco at the World Cup in Boston. National coach Steve Clarke's team claimed two penalties in the second half and only saw defender Issa Diop get a yellow card in the first half after a foul on Che Adams. The arbitration of the Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev caused fierce discussions, both on the field and at the analyst table.

The evening started disastrously for the Scots: after just 70 seconds, Ismael Saibari gave Morocco the lead. Then Scotland fought back into the match. After the 1-0 against Haiti in their opening match, they seemed to be able to achieve something again, but crucial moments did not go their way.

Two moments in the sixteen-meter area were central. First, John McGinn crashed after contact with Neil El Aynaoui. Later, Scott McTominay fell after further heavy physical contact. Referee Tantashev generally allowed much to pass and waved away both claims, to the visible dismay of the Scots.

Former referee Christina Unkel found the incident with McTominay in particular worthy of a penalty: according to her, there was clear contact at the knee and possibly even a step on the left shoe. ITV analysts Roy Keane and Ange Postecoglou disagreed and thought a penalty was too severe.

National coach Steve Clarke kept the tone diplomatic, but pointed to the situation with McGinn as the most appealing claim: “On another day someone will give that,” said Clarke, who also thought that Issa Diop got away with a yellow card in the first half after bringing down Che Adams, who he believed was heading for a free passage.

McGinn himself stated that he was hit by El Aynaoui after being the first to reach the ball. He argued for consistency: playing fluidly is fine, the midfielder said, but in the same way in similar matches. “If it had been given on the pitch, it would never have been taken back,” said McGinn, who at the same time emphasized that Scotland must create more from open play and not be dependent on refereeing decisions.

There was also criticism on the Scottish side of the studio desk about the decision to only give Diop a yellow card. Former international players Neil McCann and James McFadden saw a clear scoring opportunity for Adams and expected red. McCann: Adams had the positional advantage and there was no back coverage, while McFadden called it “100% a clear scoring opportunity”.

Remarkably, former Scottish international Pat Nevin stood up for Tantashev. He called the leader “bizarre” in the current era, but in his opinion this way of whistling would have been seen as normal ten years ago. Nevin prefers a more robust approach, in which not every push leads to a whistle.

So Scotland was left empty-handed after an evening of small margins. The question of whether the team in Boston has been disadvantaged will continue to linger for some time: one former referee sees a missed penalty, prominent analysts are divided and even within the Scottish camp the accents differ. The fact is that Morocco took the three points and leaves Scotland with mixed feelings after two matches at the World Cup.
