Kanavaro critical of Uzbekistan's chances against Portugal at the 2026 World Cup

Fabio Cannavaro, coach of the Uzbek national team, has shared his views on the upcoming match against Portugal during the 2026 World Cup. The match will be played tonight, June 23, at 8:00 PM (Moscow time).

Cannavaro acknowledges that Portugal is technically very strong, especially visible in their speed and control over the ball. "It's not just about physical strength; quality in ball control and passing is decisive. Too often losing the ball means having to defend back every time, and that is extra tough against a team like Portugal. Statistically speaking, Portugal excels in almost every area. So we should not just run, but as a team know exactly where we want to disrupt and where we can attack."


According to Cannavaro, details make the difference against a top country like Portugal. "Small mistakes can be fatal. Against Colombia we made three expensive mistakes that got us into trouble. Every match is different, with good and bad moments. But the most important thing is that we go to the extreme and keep fighting until the end." The trainer emphasizes that reducing mistakes is essential to be able to look back with satisfaction, especially towards the end of the match.

Uzbekistan, which is appearing at a World Cup for the first time, is at the bottom of group K after two defeats. Colombia leads with three points, followed by DR Congo (one point) and Portugal (also one point). The match against Portugal is therefore of great importance for Uzbekistan's chances of even having a chance of reaching the next round.
