World Cup 2026 Day 3: Brazil stumbles against Morocco, drinks breaks under discussion - Dutch team - Japan is Sunday's poster

Recap Day 3 World Cup 2026: Brazil–Morocco ends 1-1, questions about drinks breaks and empty stands in American stadiums. Preview on Sunday with the Netherlands–Japan as the top match, plus Germany–Curaçao and Ivory Coast–Ecuador.

Brazil turned Times Square yellow-green in advance, but on the field the samba was limited to a 1-1 against Morocco at the MetLife Stadium. Vinícius Júnior scored the equalizer with a beautiful goal, but the real standout was 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who outclassed the Brazilian midfield.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, who joined in May 2025, Brazil looks calmer, but the game was poor in New Jersey. Choices also turned out wrong: Roger Ibañez had a hard time as right back and was substituted at half-time; striker Igor Thiago did not perform well. The duo Bruno Guimarães–Casemiro was overrun by the energetic Moroccans in the first act. Brazil recovered somewhat after the break, but the prevailing feeling was that the five-time world champions came away with a point. Ancelotti called it “a difficult match” and saw nerves and sloppy ball possession by his team.

Earlier in the day, Qatar–Switzerland ended 1-1 in Santa Clara, with heat, empty seats and questions about FIFA's offside technology as side issues. In Boston, Scotland held on against Haiti to take three points, while Australia's furious work ethic saw off Turkey 2-0 in Vancouver to move level with the United States in the group. Elsewhere, a tornado warning was issued in much of Kansas City and the England selection was advised to take shelter indoors. In New York, the parties continued until the early hours: the Knicks won their first basketball title in 53 years.

Drink breaks: for players or for advertisers? In Santa Clara, the discussion about drink breaks was further stimulated. At Qatar–Switzerland the whistle blew for the break after 66:55 minutes; officially three minutes, but the restart did not occur until around 70:18. On American TV, advertising continued until kick-off, while players were ready earlier. The breaks were once introduced with player welfare in mind, but they now apply everywhere - without a temperature threshold - and create fixed advertising moments. Broadcasters in the United States, Brazil and Ireland, among others, use this; channels in Mexico and the United Kingdom do not. An American channel even missed live action in the second half of the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa. During Morocco–Brazil the drinks break was visibly sponsored, which only makes the question more pressing: who really benefits from this?

Empty seats in sunlit stadium bowls At Qatar–Switzerland, thousands of seats remained visibly empty, despite an official attendance that was just 861 below the capacity of 68,827. The heat (around 30 degrees) drove many fans to the shaded arena, making the stadium bowl look half full. All eleven American playing venues are large open stadium bowls that typically provide little shade in June and July. Pricing also plays a role: this World Cup is considered the most expensive ever. Many seats were also left empty in Guadalajara for South Korea–Czech Republic (evening time).

Preview on Sunday: Dutch team–Japan as top match of the day Sunday's schedule moves two hours earlier than Saturday - good news for European viewers. The eye-catcher is the Netherlands–Japan, the overture of Group F. This Orange may not be a vintage group in the vanguard, but there is quality at the back and in midfield: Frenkie de Jong, Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven, Ryan Gravenberch and Denzel Dumfries form a solid backbone. Japan is considered a dark horse, strong in qualifying and technically refined, although Kaoru Mitoma's injury is a loss. A high-quality match can be expected in Dallas.

Furthermore, Curaçao will make its World Cup debut against Germany in Houston - a historic day for the island with approximately 185,000 inhabitants, which shows the 'Blue Wave' in large numbers. From a sporting perspective, the job against the four-time world champion seems tough. In Philadelphia, Ivory Coast and Ecuador meet: the Ivorians rely on energetic wingers such as the talent Yan Diomande, while Ecuador brings perhaps the best defense in international football, under the high-profile coach Sebastián Beccacece. Finally, there is Sweden–Tunisia: Sweden with names like Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and trainer Graham Potter, compared to the generally tough Tunisia.

Day 3 in one sentence: an early tournament blow failed to materialize for Brazil, while breaks and prizes off the field determined the talk of the day – with the Dutch–Japan team as the perfect medicine for Sunday.
