The Greatest Tournament In History Delivers On The Field
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada, features an expanded format with 48 teams and has already delivered exciting matches and surprises.
The 2026 World Cup will always be different. Bigger, bolder and spanning three countries, this edition of football's most celebrated tournament has immediately announced itself as the most ambitious sporting event ever. The tournament, which kicked off June 11, is co-hosted by 16 cities — 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada — making it the first World Cup to be hosted simultaneously by three countries.
For the first time in the league's history, 48 teams will compete in 104 matches, expanding from the previous 32-team format. This idea was controversial when it was first suggested. Critics claimed it would dilute the quality, fill the schedule with pointless matches and reduce the drama that makes the World Cup so special.
The opening match immediately set the tone. The first goal of the 2026 World Cup was scored by Julián Quiñones of Mexico against South Africa in the ninth minute of the opening match, held at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. A fitting moment — Mexico became the first country to host or co-host the World Cup for a third time, and their home fans cheered loudly.
The tournament has not stood still since then. Spain looked threatening. Lamine Yamal inspired a convincing 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia, with the teenage star confirming he is one of the competition's true star players. The young winger is captivating audiences in North America and appears determined to take Spain deep into the knockout stages.

Not every giant has had it this easy. The US team has already secured a place in the knockout stages after a 2-0 win over Australia, a result that left the hosts celebrating. Playing on home soil with the eyes of an entire continent on them, the US squad has maintained the pressure with maturity and composure.
In the meantime there have been plenty of surprises. Cape Verde secured an astonishing 2-2 draw against Uruguay, with Kevin Pina's free-kick and Helio Varela's goal completing one of the most memorable comebacks of the tournament. Tunisia was eliminated after being unable to withstand Japan's fast attacking play.
The expanded format has also brought new faces to the world stage. Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan are all making their World Cup debuts, and each has contributed to a group stage that feels electric from the first whistle.
As for the rules of the game, the tournament has introduced a series of new regulations designed to clean up the sport, and FIFA's use of VAR is considered much better than in many domestic competitions. Players being substituted must now leave the field within 10 seconds, otherwise the substitute must wait a full minute before entering the field. In addition, VAR has been expanded to cover clear errors for second yellow cards and incorrectly awarded corner kicks. The changes have divided pressrooms across the continent, but few havecan deny that the matches have been tighter and sharper.
The knockout stages start on June 28, with the final scheduled for July 19. Defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi in what is widely regarded as his farewell tournament, remain one of the favourites. France, Brazil, Germany and England all lurk with intention. Every match from now on will carry the weight of history.
