Gareth Southgate backs England to World Cup glory after turning down TV work
Gareth Southgate has chosen not to take up television jobs during the World Cup so as not to disrupt the England national team. He has confidence in the players and believes they are ready to win the tournament.
Former England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed he turned down offers for television work during the World Cup because he wanted to "stay out of the way" so as not to disrupt the national team. Despite his absence, Southgate is confident in the squad, claiming they are "ready to win" at the tournament. This summer 48-team tournament in North America is the first World Cup since 1994 in which Southgate is not directly involved, following his successful spell in which England reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup, as well as two consecutive European Championship finals, before stepping down after Euro 2024.

In an Instagram video, Southgate explained his decision. "This is obviously a very different tournament for me. I have been involved in the last seven World Cups as a player, as a commentator, as a scout and then as a coach," he said. "This time I made a conscious decision not to do television. I didn't think it would be useful to talk about the team." He further clarified his desire to avoid any misinterpretations. "I don't want anything to be misinterpreted or used against them in press conferences. So it's best for me to stay out of the way."
Offering his full support, Southgate added: "I just want to say, good luck to all the boys. All the knockout nights they've had mean they're going into the tournament full of confidence. They've overcome so many obstacles to win, penalty shootouts, semi-finals, we came so close and they're ready to win. I'm looking forward to watching. I hope everyone has a great time and I'll stay out of the way." England arrived at their base in Kansas City on Saturday and will start their Group L campaign against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday.
