Australian VAR Shaun Evans returns to 2026 World Cup after acquittal in gesture case

Shaun Evans has been deployed again as assistant VAR for the World Cup match between New Zealand and Egypt, after he was acquitted by FIFA following an alleged controversial hand movement at Germany - Curaçao. Evans denied awareness of the action and is now active in Dallas for the first time since the case.

Shaun Evans is back in action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Australian referee was cleared of making an alleged racist hand gesture. Evans will act as assistant video referee (VAR) in the group match between New Zealand and Egypt on Sunday evening.

Evans was controversial after the group match between Germany and Curaçao on June 14, where he appeared shortly before kick-off with a reverse 'OK' hand gesture. This gesture is seen in some quarters as a reference to supremacist symbolism. Evans immediately denied any malicious intent and stated in a statement that it was an "unconscious, automatic movement", of which he was not aware at the time. "The attention this incident has received does not reflect who I am at all. I now understand how the gesture was interpreted and regret it. I want to make it clear that it was not my intention or was done consciously," said Evans.

FIFA's disciplinary committee concluded that Evans had not committed an offense and had not breached FIFA's disciplinary regulations. Since then, Evans had been suspended and no longer designated for World Cup matches. Now that he has been officially acquitted, he can take a seat in the control room again: during New Zealand - Egypt, Evans serves as an assistant video referee under the leadership of Mohammed Khamid.

For Evans, this means a restart on the highest global stage, with his performance being closely monitored. The group match between New Zealand and Egypt will take place in the Vancouver stadium. Evans, now 38 years old, hopes for a sporting continuation of the 2026 World Cup with his return.
