Switzerland secured first place in Group B on Wednesday evening. The Rossocrocriati made a flashy start in the second half and managed to shake off Canada with pain and difficulty. The Canadians can also prepare for the last 32. Bosnia and Herzegovina won convincingly against Qatar, but is currently in the waiting room. Switzerland has wild plans during this World Cup. The Rossocrocriati are aiming for the best World Cup performance of all time, but had a false start in Group B. After the draw with Qatar, Murat Yakin's team received a lot of criticism, but the 51-year-old national coach seems to have gotten his team up and running again in time. Following the resounding 4-1 victory over Bosnia, host country Canada was also defeated on Wednesday evening. The Swiss thus secured group victory, but it was anything but smooth sailing. Before kick-off, Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné was put in the spotlight. He broke his leg against Qatar but insisted on cheering on his home country from the sidelines. That earned him loud applause at BC Place in Vancouver. The first act was certainly nothing to write home about. In the opening phase, Breel Embolo failed to open the score on behalf of Switzerland. After more than half an hour it was the turn of ex-Feyenoorder Cyle Larin. The Canadian striker walked towards Gregor Kobel's goal alone, but hesitated too long. After the break, Switzerland brought some more life into the brewery. The Rossocrocriati started the second half with a flash with a goal from Rubén Vargas. He turned in a cross from Johan Manzambi from close range. Vargas has only scored three times for Sevilla this season, but has already scored two this World Cup. Manzambi, Switzerland's top talent, doubled the lead more than ten minutes later on Embolo's instructions. The 21-year-old Freiburg player scored his third goal of this World Cup. Canada did not give up hope and started the hunt for the tying goal. In minute 76, Jesse Marsch's team brought the tension back into the match. Union Sint-Gillis striker Promise David was still cold on the field, but managed to convert his first ball contact into a goal. Canada did not progress further, despite a few huge chances in stoppage time. Switzerland got through the eye of the needle and can prepare for the last 32. This also applies to Canada, which finishes second in Group B.
