Zbigniew Boniek named as an alternative to Maldini in Italy

According to various Italian media, including Football Italia and Corriere dello Sport, Zbigniew Boniek is in the picture as an alternative to Paolo Maldini as technical director of the Italian national football team. The recent appointment of Giovanni Malagò as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) means that he will be able to lead a restructuring of the staff around the national team.
After the departure of national coach Gennaro Gattuso and delegation chief Gianluigi Buffon earlier this year, Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini, among others, are the main candidates for the coaching position. Before that happens, the FIGC first wants to appoint a technical director.
Club icon Paolo Maldini in particular is mentioned a lot, but he has been without a club since leaving Milan in the summer of 2023. Boniek, a former Juventus and Roma player, is now also explicitly mentioned as an alternative. Boniek made waves in Serie A and after his playing career was coach of Lecce, Bari, Sambenedettese and Avellino, among others. The Pole was also president and later vice-president at UEFA until he left in April 2025.
The arrival of an experienced technical director is crucial for the renewal that Malagò wants to implement at the Squadra Azzurra.
