Xavi Simons sees 'big things' for Tottenham under De Zerbi
Xavi Simons is confident about Tottenham under Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian kept Spurs in the Premier League and, according to Simons, brought a new energy. The Dutchman, who missed the end of the season with a knee injury, expects further growth and better performances next season.
Xavi Simons is optimistic about the future of Tottenham Hotspur under Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian took over late in the season and guided Spurs to survival in the Premier League, after which, according to the Dutchman, the atmosphere and the game clearly improved.
De Zerbi became Tottenham's third head coach of the 2025/26 season. He succeeded Igor Tudor, who in turn had replaced Thomas Frank but did not achieve a victory in the top class. In seven league games with De Zerbi at the helm, the Londoners recorded three wins, two draws and two defeats. On the final day, a 1-0 win over Everton was enough to secure enforcement. Earlier, his first victory, 1-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, had already set the tone for a stronger final sprint.

“It has been a very difficult season, especially for the fans,” Simons told CBS. "But with the new trainer, Roberto, we were really happy. There was a good connection between players and staff. In the last matches, even though I couldn't play, you could see on the field that the boys had a new boost and vibe. That was very positive. With a view to next season, I think big things are coming with this trainer."
Simons missed the last weeks of the competition due to a knee injury (cruciate ligament), but is looking ahead with confidence. In the Premier League this season he recorded two goals and five assists. With 34 chances created, he was number two at Spurs behind Pedro Porro (53). The midfielder expects to grow even further under De Zerbi: "Many players have already spoken positively about him. For me it gave extra confidence because I know his way of playing. He was also an attacking midfielder himself. In my role I like freedom, and I think he gives me that. That is important and helps me to show my best game. I am very happy with that."
Tottenham open the upcoming Premier League season on August 22 with an away match against Brentford.
