World Cup 2026 weather: stadium roof saves day eight - flood warning in Atlanta, other matches under roof

Heat and thunderstorms determine the weather pattern on day eight of the 2026 World Cup. A flood warning is in force in Atlanta, but the Czech Republic–South Africa continues indoors. Switzerland–Bosnia and Herzegovina (Inglewood) and Canada–Qatar (Vancouver) are also indoors. Mexico–South Korea (Zapopan) will experience mild conditions in the evening.

The 2026 World Cup will take place in warm and sometimes stormy conditions. A significant part of the 104 matches will be played at temperatures above 32 degrees. Spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico, this appears to be the hottest edition since 1994, when the tournament was last held in North America. In addition to heat and humidity, thunderstorms mainly pose a logistical challenge. In the United States, a thunderstorm protocol applies: if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, the match is stopped. A 30-minute clock then starts, which starts again every time a new impact occurs. Last summer, Chelsea–Benfica in Charlotte (North Carolina) lasted a total of 4 hours and 38 minutes due to repeated lightning breaks.

The following matches of day eight and the weather per location:

Czech Republic – South Africa (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta; kick-off 12:00 noon local time, ET) - Playing conditions: indoors, so no problems on the field. - Weather around the stadium: a flood warning in force all day. Showers and thunderstorms developing later in the morning; coverage increases in the afternoon due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur. - Temperature/wind: warm and humid, maximum approximately 29°C (84°F). Winds from southwest 10–15 mph (about 16–24 km/h), with gusts up to about 25 mph (about 40 km/h).

Switzerland – Bosnia and Herzegovina (SoFi Stadium, Inglewood; kick-off 12:00 local time, PT) - Playing conditions: indoors. - Weather around the stadium: pleasant. Morning clouds will thin out from noon. - Temperature/wind: around 21°C (70°F), west wind 5–10 mph (about 8–16 km/h).

Canada – Qatar (BC Place, Vancouver; kick-off 3:00 PM local time, PT) - Playing conditions: indoors. - Weather around the stadium: sunny and dry. - Temperature/wind: approximately 21°C (70°F). Moderate wind from northwest, around 20 mph (about 32 km/h).

Mexico – South Korea (Estadio Akron, Zapopan; kick-off 7:00 PM local time, CST) - Weather: partly cloudy and pleasant, high around 28°C (82°F). - During the evening: partly cloudy and around 25°C (77°F) at 7 p.m. Sunset at 7:36 PM. Partly cloudy at 9pm with around 21°C (70°F). - Wind: west 5–10 mph (approximately 8–16 km/h).

Conclusion: thanks to the closed roofs in Atlanta, Inglewood and Vancouver, the matches are not directly affected by the stormy weather. However, especially in Atlanta, be careful around the stadium due to the expected showers, wind and the current flood warning. In Zapopan the prospects are favorable for a smooth evening match.
