World Cup 2026: Morocco beats Canada to qualify for the quarter-finals again
In Houston, Morocco once again managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup after a convincing 3-0 victory over Canada. Two goals from Azzedine Ounahi and a goal from Soufiane Rahimi made the difference. Morocco will now face the winner of France-Paraguay on Thursday.
Morocco has qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the second time in a row in Houston, thanks to a great 3-0 victory over co-organizer Canada. In a first half with more yellow cards (6) than goal attempts (5), Canada had the best chances, but no goals were scored.
Immediately after the break, Morocco, which became dangerous for the first time, managed to strike. Soufiane Rahimi was brought down on the touchline by Canadian defender Luc de Fougerolles, earning the seventh yellow card of the match. From the subsequent free kick, Achraf Hakimi cleverly brought the ball to the edge of the penalty area, where Azzedine Ounahi opened the scoring with a placed shot into the bottom right corner: 1-0.
From that moment on, Morocco completely took over the initiative. Canada, which initially showed more conviction, failed to turn the tide—partly because Alphonso Davies again only came on for a short time due to his lingering hamstring injury.
In the 82nd minute, Ounahi decided the game with his second goal after a good action by Brahim Díaz, who broke free on the right and served Ounahi for 2-0. In the final minute of injury time, Rahimi set the final score at 3-0.
Morocco, which reached the semi-finals in 2022, will meet the winner of France-Paraguay in the quarter-finals in Boston on Thursday.
