World Cup 2026 Group L: England convincing group winner, Croatia and Ghana also through
England secured group victory in Group L at the 2026 World Cup by beating Panama 2-0. Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 and advanced to the knockout phase as number two. Ghana also qualifies as one of the best numbers three for the next round.
England has definitively secured group leadership in Group L of the 2026 World Cup. After an earlier surprising draw against Ghana, national coach Southgate's team made no mistakes in the last group match against Panama. After a goalless first half, Jude Bellingham broke the spell in the 62nd minute with a volley from a corner. Five minutes later, Harry Kane doubled the lead, good for his third goal this tournament and a new English goalscoring record at the World Cup.
England's victory meant the end of the World Cup for Panama. Striking: Panama is the only country at this World Cup that has remained without goals, something that last happened in 2010.
The other match in the group, Croatia against Ghana, was about something: both teams could still qualify, with Ghana already assured of a place in the next round. Petar Sučić put Croatia ahead with a good long-range shot, but it was not until the 73rd minute that Ghana leveled through Derrick Luckassen after a free kick from Ernest Nuamah. Although VAR intervened, the goal stood. Croatia secured the victory soon afterwards: Nikola Vlašić headed home from a corner. With this 2-1 win, Croatia secured second place; Ghana finished third, but still qualified for the knockout phase via the ranking for the numbers three.
The further match schedule: England will meet the number three from Group I or K in the eighth finals, Croatia will meet the number two from Group K. Ghana still has to wait and see who the opponent will be, but is assured of a place in the last 32.
