Women as referees at two additional 2026 World Cup matches, including the Dutch team

Katja García makes her debut at a men's World Cup as the third female head referee and will referee Tunisia - Netherlands in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. The American Tori Penso will also be appointed again. This marks a historic moment and further breakthrough for women in international football.

During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, female referees will act as referees in two group matches in the third round. ESPN confirms this. On June 26, Mexican Katja García will officiate the match between Tunisia and the Dutch national team at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. This makes García the third female referee ever at a men's World Cup.

García, 33 years old, previously worked as a fourth official at various matches with, among others, the Netherlands – Japan (2-2), England – Croatia (4-2) and the United States – Australia (2-0). Now she gets her chance as head referee when the Dutch team meet Tunisia.

In addition, the American Tori Penso will be active again. She refereed the match between the Czech Republic and South Africa (1-1) in the second round, making her the second female head referee at a men's world championship, after France's Stéphanie Frappart. Penso has now been named for the Ecuador-Germany match on June 25 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

The appointments of García and Penso are important steps in the development of international football and boost the visibility and acceptance of female referees at the highest level. It is known that the 2026 World Cup will mark the first time that more than one woman will be used as head referee for the men.

The Tunisia - Netherlands match will be played on June 26, kick-off at 2 a.m. Dutch time. The Ecuador - Germany match is one day earlier, June 25 at 11:00 PM Dutch time. Both matches take place in the last round of the group stage, which puts extra pressure on the referees.
