Vinicius Júnior convincingly leads Brazil to the 2026 World Cup knockout phase, Neymar makes return
Brazil did excellent business at the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday evening by beating Scotland 3-0. Vinicius Júnior was again the big man with two goals, while Neymar made his long-awaited return on behalf of the Seleção. With this victory, Brazil ends up as the leader in Group C and will meet the number two from Group F in the eighth finals, where Japan, Sweden and the Netherlands are contenders.
The 2026 World Cup increasingly seems to be Vinicius Júnior's stage. The Real Madrid striker was decisive again in the group final against Scotland with two goals and led Brazil to a convincing 3-0 win at the Hard Rock Stadium. As group winners, the Seleção is therefore assured of a place in the knockout phase.
Vinicius Júnior opened the scoring early, after an error by the Scottish defense. The Brazilian winger even had a chance to score a third goal, but VAR stopped it due to a questionable foul. Bruno Guimarães stood out with a strong game and provided the assist for Vini's second goal, who is becoming the eye-catcher of the tournament with four goals and an assist from three group matches.
Matheus Cunha scored the third Brazilian goal, after a nice action by Guimarães. National coach Carlo Ancelotti gave Casemiro a rest because of a yellow card. In the second half, Neymar was finally allowed to make an appearance, after an injury that has kept him out since October 2023. The star player of the Divine Canaries immediately stood out with some actions and opportunities.
With this victory, Brazil ends up with seven points in Group C, ahead of Morocco, which as number two also qualifies for the next round. Brazil's opponent in the eighth finals comes from Group F. The Netherlands could therefore possibly become the opponent, depending on the results there. The decision on the final score in that group will be made on Thursday evening.
With his achievements, Vinicius Júnior joins an illustrious list of Brazilians who managed to score in every group match during a global final tournament, alongside names such as Jairzinho, Romário, Rivaldo and Ronaldo.
Brazil impressed in the group stage and seems ready for the battle for the world title. The next challenge awaits on Monday afternoon (June 29), when the round of 16 is scheduled.
