United States considers World Cup 2038: 'Can handle expansion'
The United States is considering hosting the 2038 World Cup, with a possible expansion to 64 participating countries.
The United States is one of the organizers of this World Cup, together with Canada and Mexico. That apparently works well, because the 2038 World Cup could also easily be held in the States. For the first time, 48 countries are participating in this World Cup, instead of the usual 32. FIFA is even considering expanding the field of participants to 64 countries, perhaps before the 2030 World Cup, the BBC writes.
The United States would like such an expansion with a view to the 2038 World Cup. 'The World Cup will probably be expanded to 64 countries at some point. I think the United States could handle such a tournament," White House Executive Director Andrew Giuliani said. Yet he still has a punch up his sleeve. 'Let's get through this World Cup first before we start thinking about a World Cup in the future.'
Giuliani is said to have spoken with President Donald Trump about a new World Cup in the United States. 'There is no longer a country suitable to organize a World Cup. You can see that on social media," Giuliani said. 'We have a great infrastructure and that is inviting. We also already have large stadiums where games can be played, unlike other countries. That saves billions.'
In 2030, the World Cup will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, although the three opening matches will be played in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. This has to do with the centenary of the final tournament, which was first played in Uruguay in 1930. Saudi Arabia will host the World Cup in 2034. It is not yet known where the final tournament will be held in 2038.
