USMNT prepares for World Cup start against Paraguay: Who will Pochettino choose?

The 2026 World Cup has kicked off and an important test of strength is immediately scheduled for the United States: Paraguay is the opponent in the group stage. While the two teams played a friendly match at the end of last year - and Team USA won 2-1 despite the absence of star players such as Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams and Chris Richards - those players are now expected to be present.

National coach Mauricio Pochettino makes his debut as head coach at the World Cup, after having been active as a player in 2002. With his fresh look, he faces some interesting choices, especially now that almost all the big names are fit. The competition is especially visible in midfield and in attack.

Goalkeeper battle: will it be Freese or Turner?

The decision under the bar is far from certain. Matt Freese seems to be the first choice based on last season, but Matt Turner - with World Cup experience - is also a serious candidate. Pochettino has not made any firm statements so far, which creates tension towards the opening game.


Defensively, Chris Richards looks fit enough to lead the defense, flanked by captain Tim Ream. On the right, Alex Freeman has established himself as a right central defender, while Sergino Dest serves as a right wingback. Yet there are alternatives, such as Mark McKenzie, Auston Trusty or Miles Robinson.

In midfield, Tyler Adams seems to be a certainty, just like star Christian Pulisic up front. However, the rise of Malik Tillman presents Pochettino with a luxury problem. Should he opt for regulars such as Weston McKennie and Timothy Weah, or does Pochettino favorite Cristian Roldan now get a chance? There is even a possibility that two of these household names will start on the bench.
