Tuchel confirms: Rice vice-captain of England - 'He has the highest football intellect'
Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Declan Rice as England vice-captain and praised his exceptional football intellect.
England coach Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Declan Rice has been named vice-captain of the national team. The midfielder shares captaincy responsibility with striker Harry Kane.
"We have a leadership group of five to six players without a permanent belt. The belt is carried by Harry Kane and Declan Rice. When Harry was not in camp, we immediately and without hesitation gave it to Declan," said Tuchel.
According to the national coach, Rice distinguishes himself by his game intelligence. “He has the highest football intellect: he monitors our structure, the adjustments and the rhythm in the match.” Tuchel also pointed out that Rice has performed at top level over the past two seasons: “He has been a key player in matches on the highest European stage and is currently one of the best in Europe,” he told Sky Sports.
The choice of Rice as vice-captain underlines his status within the England squad heading into the 2026 World Cup.
