A new wind is blowing through north London. Tottenham Hotspur are on the cusp of a major clean-up within their playing squad, with the aim of generating a record fee of a reported £222 million through targeted outgoing transfers. This is not only an attempt to free up money, but above all a clear signal of a new transfer strategy: parting at the right time and at the best market value.

According to reports in English media, everything indicates that Tottenham is opting for a new course, in which no longer passively waiting for bids is central, but where favorable sales moments are actively sought. In the past, the club has kept players such as Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon and Yves Bissouma on board for too long, causing their market value to shrink significantly. With the new policy, the club management wants to correct past mistakes.


The first steps have already been taken. For example, Brennan Johnson was sold to Crystal Palace for £35 million last winter. Transfers for Luka Vuskovic, Radu Dragusin and Alfie Devine are also in the pipeline and are expected to yield a substantial return. Together these deals would put the club in the region of £77m before any major decisions have to be made.

More names are circulating in the corridors. Players such as Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario and Lucas Bergvall are all on the radar for possible departure, provided suitable offers are made. For Spence, it is especially important that interested parties, such as Everton, meet the asking price of £25 million. Romero and Bergvall, both valued at £50 million, represent the tension between sporting value and financial opportunity. Vicario also seems to be facing an exit, partly due to internal competition; he could reportedly leave for around £20 million.

The new approach indicates that Tottenham is saying goodbye to the policy in which players saw their value evaporate. With a stricter sales regime, the club not only wants to remain flexible in terms of sport, but above all wants to create financial strength for further selection in the future. If this strategy is successful, Tottenham will position itself more emphatically as one of the policy-led top clubs in England.
