Tottenham bereikt akkoord van £85 miljoen voor Mateus Fernandes; Man United houdt vast aan waardering

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with West Ham United for the transfer of Mateus Fernandes worth £85 million. It concerns a guaranteed amount without bonuses. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder was considered a priority for Spurs this summer, especially after an £80 million bid for Sandro Tonali was rejected at Newcastle.

Manchester United was also in the race, but did not want to match the amount offered by Tottenham. Fernandes was open to both options, according to insiders, while his agent Jorge Mendes spoke to both Tottenham and United. However, at Old Trafford they continue to adhere to the principle of only entering at a price that they consider to be in line with the market. There was internal doubt as to whether Fernandes really wanted to choose United.


United's priority continues to be to strengthen the center of midfield. A £35million deal has already been reached with Atalanta for Ederson, although his arrival has been postponed due to a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad.

United will kick off their pre-season on July 9 and the squad has remained largely intact to date, with no major incoming or outgoing transfers. Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee is still at the club, while sources dismiss rumors of a departure for midfielder Mason Mount.

For Tottenham, bringing in Fernandes is a big hit on the market. The London club wants to complete the deal quickly after the agreement with West Ham, so that the trainer and technical staff have an extra option in midfield heading into the new season.
