Andrei Tikhonov, eight-time national champion with Spartak Moscow, has spoken out about Lionel Messi's World Cup form. The former international sees an Argentina that plays completely in the service of its captain and concludes that the star player in the United States not only relies on his unparalleled quality, but also has the necessary fortune on his side.
According to Tikhonov, Messi further cemented his name in the history books with a double against Austria, making him the new all-time top scorer at the World Cup finals. The Argentinian now has 18 World Cup goals, breaking the record of German Miroslav Klose.
"You should not compare Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They are two of the greatest football players of our time. One may have scored a little more, but that essentially makes no difference," said Tikhonov. He sees a difference in the dynamics within the teams: "In Argentina everyone plays for Messi and looks up to him. In Portugal there are young players who have not been competing at this level for long, but already consider themselves superstars."
Tikhonov further notes that Messi has looked more relaxed since the 2022 world title. With the second goal against Austria, he says, the Argentinian attackers consciously looked for their captain, where they could also have aimed for their own success. According to him, the joy on the Argentinian bench underlined Messi's special status within the team.
When asked about the top scorer's crown of this 2026 World Cup, Tikhonov keeps the door wide open for Messi. According to him, that mainly depends on how far Argentina reaches in the knockout phase. The Russian hopes that the Argentinian captain will end his - probably - last World Cup in style.
