Thomas Tuchel, the current England manager, sees this return to the Azteca as an opportunity for symbolic recovery.
England will play fellow hosts Mexico this week in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Remarkably, it is exactly forty years ago that Maradona defeated England in the quarter-finals with one legendary dribble and the controversial hand goal. "That goal would never be approved these days," Tuchel admits. Yet he calls it one of the most iconic moments in the history of the World Cup.
Tuchel, who was thirteen years old at the time of that tournament, calls it 'Maradona's World Cup'. The German coach was deeply impressed by the impact of that match: 'Even as a neutral viewer, that match meant something special.'
Although England will not face Argentina this time, but will face host country Mexico, the past still lives on. Tuchel hopes that with this eighth final, his team can finally put an end to the Azteca past and turn the negative sentiment into sporting success.
The match against Mexico takes place under special circumstances: the Azteca is located at an altitude of more than 2,200 meters, something that the English team takes extra account of in its preparation. "We will go to Mexico City a night early to adapt," Tuchel said.
