Spurs enter £100m Tonali deal: Arsenal and Man City also in the race

Tottenham enters the battle for Sandro Tonali. Newcastle maintains a high asking price, while Arsenal and Manchester City have been in the picture for some time. Spurs' interest comes at the insistence of Roberto De Zerbi, but convincing both club and player base is needed.

Tottenham Hotspur have joined the battle for Sandro Tonali, according to The Telegraph. Newcastle United's 26-year-old Italian midfielder is reportedly on the market for around £100 million, a figure that will immediately put any negotiation into a different category.

Spurs' interest is serious and is mainly driven internally by trainer Roberto De Zerbi. It is true that Tonali's entourage initially saw Arsenal and Manchester City as more attractive destinations. That detail is not unimportant: Tottenham will not only have to convince Newcastle, but also the player's camp.

Newcastle, meanwhile, remains calm. Tonali is there until 2029, with a club option for another year, which gives the club considerable negotiating space. The Northern English seem determined to ensure an orderly settlement: anyone who wants Tonali simply has to approach the price. The midfielder joined from AC Milan in 2023 for around £55 million and was given a ten-month ban shortly after his arrival for breaching gambling rules. Newcastle continued to support the player during that period and even extended his contract, something that played a major role in the perception of the supporters.

At St. James' Park, Arsenal have been seen as favorites since January, when Tonali's name was first explicitly linked to the Emirates. Manchester City have been kept informed, but the national champions appear to have their priorities elsewhere at the moment, including midfielder Elliot Anderson. According to the same report, Manchester United has dropped out due to the combination of transfer fee and salary demands.

For Tottenham, Tonali's appeal is clear. He brings control, aggression, pace and experience at the highest European level. He is a type of midfielder who can shape matches rather than just endure them. Under De Zerbi, who likes the midriff to be dominant and technically skilled, Tonali would fit in perfectly with the desire to give the game direction and sharpness from the center.

Yet there are risks associated with a transfer of this order of magnitude. The price tag of 100 million pounds weighs heavily and expectations would immediately be sky high. Moreover, the question is justified whether Spurs can offer Tonali the same sporting platform as Arsenal or Manchester City in the short term. Tottenham must therefore be clear that this is not an isolated headline signing, but a logical move within a broader plan.

That does not alter the fact that the possible arrival of Tonali in North London is causing excitement. If De Zerbi actually has him at the top of his list, Tottenham will have to walk the talk - with a convincing sporting story towards the player and a strong offer towards Newcastle. The coming weeks should show whether Spurs are more than a thorn in a top deal, or whether the club under De Zerbi is really prepared to take the next step in the transfer market.
