Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham Reach New Contract Agreement at Celtic

Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have agreed terms on their new contracts at Celtic, with their coaching significantly improving the team's performance.

Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have reached a financial agreement on contracts that will allow them to remain at Celtic for next season. Only the final contractual details remain to be resolved. These provisions are expected to be agreed today and are reportedly based on the same framework previously used for Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy's staff. If the remaining details are finalized as expected, confirmation from Martin O'Neill's staff is expected soon, with an official announcement likely to follow in the coming days.

Their continued presence will be welcomed by the supporters, who have witnessed first-hand the impact of the coaching group since joining the club. The scale of Celtic's recovery under O'Neill, Maloney and Fotheringham is best illustrated by the numbers. O'Neill and his staff took over a team that was 14 points behind the top of the table. By the end of the season, Celtic had reversed that deficit and regained their place as champions.

In O'Neill's two spells this season, Celtic collected 59 points from 23 games and had a remarkable goal difference of +30. Their title rivals simply could not follow suit. Hearts collected 46 points from 24 games, Rangers 45 from 23, and Motherwell 37 from 23. Equally important, Maloney and Fotheringham helped to restore the standards, intensity and confidence that were lacking earlier in the season.

Fotheringham spoke to WFi in December 2025 about his and Maloney's return to the club, initially to help O'Neill temporarily. "I received a call from Shaun at around 11.30pm. You could hear the adrenaline in his voice. He just said, 'Foz, can you be in Lennoxtown at the last minute?'

Celtic's 86 percent win rate in the league and 83 percent in the league reflected a team that operated with the confidence and consistency that defined O'Neill's most successful years at the club. The defensive organization improved, performance became more controlled, and the squad rediscovered the resilience needed to withstand the pressure of a title challenge. As well as winning the Scottish Premiership title, Celtic also secured a domestic double with a Scottish Cup Final victory over Dunfermline Athletic in May, providing a fitting end to the season and further highlighting the effectiveness of this coaching team.
