Senegal sets new record for African football at the World Cup
Senegal set a new record for most goals scored by an African country at a World Cup, with 10 goals in the tournament after beating Belgium.
The success of the African countries is perhaps one of the biggest stories of this summer's World Cup. From Morocco eliminating the Netherlands to South Africa taking second place in a competitive Group A, African football is in the spotlight. This afternoon in Seattle, Senegal joined the discussion by taking the lead against Belgium and setting a new World Cup record. After a near miss by Ismaïla Sarr early in the match, Habib Diarra saved his teammate's honor by scoring from close range to give his team the lead. With that goal, Senegal has now scored 9 goals at this World Cup, more than any other African country in the history of the tournament. Senegal further expanded that total in the second half, thanks to Ismaïla Sarr, bringing the total to 10! Furthermore, Diarra's first-half goal was Senegal's first in a World Cup knockout match since they scored against Sweden in the round of 16 of the 2002 edition.
