Scunthorpe United bring back Jacob Butterfield as player-coach
Scunthorpe United have re-signed midfielder Jacob Butterfield. The 36-year-old signs a contract as a player and trainer, after previously playing for Gateshead. Butterfield previously played for Scunthorpe and will now return to Glanford Park.
Scunthorpe United have re-signed Jacob Butterfield. The English midfielder signs with the club on a special construction: he will work as both a player and a trainer. Butterfield, now 36 years old, left Scunthorpe last season for an adventure with National League rival Gateshead, where he turned down a new contract. Now he chooses to return to the Iron.
Butterfield already has a history with Scunthorpe United. Between 2022 and 2024 he played 89 games, scoring twelve times. After his departure to Gateshead, there is now talk of a new step in his career, where he will be important not only on the field but also in a coaching role. It is not known how long the new contract of the former player of Barnsley, Huddersfield Town and Derby County will run. This remained unmentioned on the club side.
With the return of Butterfield, Scunthorpe not only gains experience on the field, but also extra knowledge for the technical staff. The club hopes to lay a good foundation for the new season in the National League.
