A serious incident occurred on Wednesday, June 19, during a public viewing evening of the 2026 World Cup match between South Korea and Mexico in the Koreatown district (Los Angeles). As football fans watched the match in anticipation, an unknown man suddenly opened fire on the crowd. The local resident, Duart Luis Romero, immediately came to the rescue and managed to tackle the perpetrator and throw him to the ground. However, while struggling, the attacker fired a shot, hitting Romero in the leg and injuring an artery.
The situation was critical, but Los Angeles Police Department officer Helen Zheng quickly arrived on the scene. She immediately applied a tourniquet and stopped the heavy bleeding, allowing Romero's condition to be stabilized before emergency services arrived. Zheng later emphasized to the media that every second counted: "It was clear that help was needed immediately. Everything happened in a few moments."
Romero later expressed his gratitude to the officer; he states that her decisive action saved his life. The suspect, identified by police as Andy Rodriguez, was apprehended by a colleague of Zheng.
The shooting incident has had a major impact on the local community and casts a shadow on what should have been a festive sporting event.
