Salah stands up and gives Egypt its first ever World Cup victory
Egypt recorded its first World Cup victory against New Zealand, with Mohamed Salah the decisive player.
Egypt started the World Cup well with a draw against Belgium, on paper the strongest team in Group G. However, on the night from Sunday to Monday, Hossam Hassan's team had a false start. New Zealand started the match better and deservedly took the lead after fifteen minutes. Finn Surman was able to head it in convincingly from a corner kick from Tim Payne: 1-0.
That meant that Egypt had to chase early, but the North African country had difficulty creating real opportunities. Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush fired some warning shots, but it was only in the second half that Egypt really pushed through. The goal was scored in the 58th minute. Mohamed Hany crossed from the right and Mostafa Ziko nodded in for the 1-1. Ten minutes later it was Salah who rose: he combined with Ziko and scored the decisive 2-1. It was the reward for a good second half by the Egyptians. New Zealand tried again, but was unable to equalize. In the 82nd minute, Trézéguet made the decision by heading home from a Salha corner. Egypt thus recorded its first ever victory at a World Cup. Hassan's team now leads Group G with four points, ahead of Belgium and Iran.
