Cristiano Ronaldo did not mind questions about his future with the national team after Portugal's 2-1 victory over Croatia. The 41-year-old captain led his country to the round of 16 and was named Man of the Match by the tournament organization afterwards, but did not want to fuel speculation about a possible farewell.
Those rumors flared up just before kick-off due to a message from his sister Kátia Aveiro on social media, in which she suggested that the end of Ronaldo's international career may be in sight. However, Ronaldo held off the boat. “My future is not important right now,” said Portuguese media. "After the tournament I will have time to talk to my family. Then I will make the best decision. I no longer make decisions on a whim. Now it is time to enjoy this victory."
Ronaldo was taken off after 81 minutes and looked back on the game with mixed feelings. According to the captain, Portugal had control before half time, but things became considerably more difficult after the break. "Today we had to show that we can also suffer. If you want to win a tournament of this magnitude, it should be possible. For the neutral viewer it was an interesting match. The penalty kick brought the release; from that moment on it became a little easier, but it was never easy. That is the World Cup."
Ronaldo was also the center of attention off the field. Hundreds of Portuguese fans gathered at the team hotel, where the captain took plenty of time to thank the crowd.
