Vinícius Júnior is one of the standouts at the 2026 World Cup. The Brazilian was decisive again in the 2-1 win over Japan in the round of 32 and has so far scored three goals and two assists in Brazil's first three matches. His form on the global stage is in stark contrast to the uncertainty surrounding his future at Real Madrid.
According to Spanish Marca, Real Madrid and Vinicius have agreed not to resume talks about a contract extension until after the World Cup. The club does not want to disrupt the attacker's focus on the tournament. Although both parties have publicly expressed their intention to continue, no agreement has yet been put in writing.
The biggest stumbling block is financial in nature. Vinícius reportedly earns around €20 million per season and wants to scale up towards €30 million. That level seems difficult for Real Madrid to achieve, partly given the winger's dip in form in the past two seasons. At the same time, the clock is ticking: in six months, Vinícius can sign a pre-contract and as of January 1, 2027 he can freely negotiate with other clubs, as his current contract runs until the summer of 2027.
Despite this time pressure, Real Madrid's club management remains calm. There are currently no concrete offers for the Brazilian. Previous interest from Saudi Arabia has weakened and an old link with Chelsea is off the table following the arrival of Xabi Alonso.
In the meantime, Vinícius' sporting status is rising. Romário recently ranked him among the five best players in the world. A strong World Cup will only strengthen the winger's negotiating position. Whether this also leads to the salary conditions he is aiming for will remain to be seen after the tournament.
