RB Leipzig activates clause: Demichelis succeeds Werner as trainer
RB Leipzig have signed Martin Demichelis as Ole Werner's successor. Despite Champions League qualification and an average points score of 1.91, Leipzig said goodbye to Werner last week. Demichelis signs until 2028; Mallorca receives a sum of millions through a clause. His debut is expected to follow in mid-August in the DFB-Pokal at Eintracht Trier.
RB Leipzig has a new head coach: Martin Demichelis signs a contract in Saxony until the summer of 2028 and succeeds Ole Werner. The club announced the arrival of the 45-year-old Argentinian on Monday.
Leipzig decided to say goodbye to Werner last Wednesday, after just one season. That happened despite qualifying for the Champions League and averaging 1.91 points per game—the third-best return of any Leipzig manager in the Bundesliga to date. The club management justified the change with the belief that "substantive further development and a different approach" are necessary for the coming challenges.
“With Martin Demichelis we are bringing in a trainer who has gained experience as a player and coach in Europe, South America and North America, and has worked at the highest level,” sports director Marcel Schäfer said in a club message. “That international view fits perfectly with RB Leipzig and our global course.”

Demichelis, former defender of Bayern Munich (174 Bundesliga matches, 13 goals), took over at RCD Mallorca at the end of February. However, the Spanish club could not avoid relegation. Leipzig released a release clause to release Demichelis; Mallorca will receive a lump sum payment in the low seven-figure segment for this.
The new coach calls RB Leipzig “an ambitious club with a clear vision, excellent talents and the urge to continuously improve at the highest level”. He says he has great respect for the work of his predecessor and wants to build on it. Demichelis strives for “courageous, intense and attractive football” with a team that takes responsibility and knows how to touch the fans in Leipzig with its passion.
Preparation for the new season starts on July 13; the usual performance and fitness tests for the selection are scheduled from July 11. Demichelis' official debut as RB coach is expected to follow in mid-August, in the first round of the DFB-Pokal at Eintracht Trier.
