Rangers enter the battle for French defense talent Sankhoun Diawara
Rangers want to strengthen themselves with the talented French defender Sankhoun Diawara (FC Troyes). FC Basel is also in the race. Diawara took a step up with Troyes last season, but can now make the switch due to his expiring contract. The Scottish club is looking for young defensive reinforcement after the departure of several mercenaries and possible transfers of strong players.
Rangers from Glasgow have signed for the signature of young French defender Sankhoun Diawara, who is currently under contract with FC Troyes. Sources from France report that the Scots are not the only ones: the Swiss FC Basel are also actively pursuing a summer transfer for the 20-year-old Frenchman.
Diawara is known as one of the most striking talents of Troyes, where he made his definitive breakthrough last season. After training at FC Solitaires, Paris-Charenton and the youth of Troyes, Diawara was given a permanent place in the second team in 2024. This eventually led to a starting spot in the first team, directly contributing to Troyes' promotion to the top French level as Ligue 2 champions.
With an expiring contract in 2025, FC Troyes seems to be open to a transfer; the club wants to prevent him from leaving for nothing next year. Diawara made 17 appearances in various competitions last season and his versatility - he can play as a left back in addition to central defense - makes him extra attractive to interested clubs.
Rangers show ambition in the transfer market. With a new coach at the helm and after a disappointing last season, several reinforcements have already been brought in, including Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, Ivor Pandur and Dan Neil. The Scottish club is expressly looking for defensive stability, now that mercenaries Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons, Jayden Meghoma and Derek Cornelius have left and regulars such as James Tavernier are a question mark.
Young talent Diawara could become a fourth central option for Rangers, behind Ben Godfrey, Emmanuel Fernandez and John Souttar. Due to his age and growth potential, he also fits within the policy to develop and retain talent in-house. However, FC Basel will not simply give way, which increases the pressure on the Scottish club to quickly conclude negotiations with FC Troyes.
The next big step in his career beckons for Diawara, possibly towards Scottish top football and European matches with Rangers.
