The Argentinian striker, currently coveted by FC Barcelona as a possible successor to Robert Lewandowski, hopes for a transfer this summer. In conversation with daily newspaper La Vanguardia, Baena indicated that he was surprised by Álvarez's open transfer wish. “I didn't expect him to come out like that now,” said Baena, who is participating in the World Cup with the Spanish national team. Yet he supports his fellow player: 'It is very personal. If he has a dream, I understand that he would like to pursue it. I would have acted differently myself, but if that is really his ambition, I encourage him to go for it.'
Yet Baena knows that the situation is complex. 'Ultimately, players simply carry out the club's instructions. If Atlético decides not to sell him, he will have to live with that for now.' However, Baena hopes that the table will be discussed again as soon as the World Cup is over: 'I cannot imagine that there will not be a discussion between all parties.'
The transfer soap surrounding Julián Álvarez has not yet been resolved. The coming weeks could be crucial for the Argentine forward's future after the World Cup.
