Nico Williams criticizes rough tackle by De la Cruz that injured him

Nico Williams has been critical of the hard and, in his view, unnecessary tackle from Nicolas de la Cruz, which caused the Spanish attacker to be injured in the match against Uruguay at the World Cup. Williams speaks about one of the toughest days of his career and is in danger of missing the knockout phase. According to the Spanish association, there is still hope of a return at a later stage of the tournament.

Spanish international Nico Williams has spoken out strongly about the tackle of Nicolas de la Cruz, which injured him in the group match between Spain and Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup. The wing attacker suffered a muscle injury in the final phase of the match after a serious foul by De la Cruz, who was booked for it. Williams will almost certainly miss Spain's next match in the knockout phase.

Williams, who had an injury-riddled season at Athletic Club, reacted emotionally on social media: "Today is one of the toughest days of my life. I have been injured again after an incident with a colleague who acted out of frustration and sadness. In my view, this action could have been avoided; it was completely unnecessary. But this will not stop me."

The Spanish association announced that it was a 'moderate' injury. According to the medical staff, there is still a chance that Williams will return to the field later in the tournament. The match ended in a 1-0 win for Spain, after which Uruguay was eliminated. Immediately after the incident, Agustin Canobbio also received a direct red card on behalf of Uruguay for a serious foul on Pau Cubarsi.
