The Netherlands will meet Morocco in Monterrey Stadium with a spectacular view
The Netherlands will play a match outside the US for the first time at the 2026 World Cup, in Mexico against Morocco. The match will take place at the Monterrey Stadium, officially Estadio BBVA, a modern stadium with space for 53,500 supporters and an impressive view of the Cerro de la Silla.
After two group matches in the United States, the Dutch national team is preparing for a special challenge at the 2026 World Cup: the confrontation with Morocco in Mexico. On the night from Monday to Tuesday, the Dutch team will take on this tournament outside American soil for the first time, namely in the Estadio BBVA, or the Monterrey Stadium, in Guadalupe, a suburb of Monterrey.
Monterrey Stadium is not just any venue. This stadium, nicknamed 'The Steel Giant' because of its extensive construction of steel, aluminum and concrete, can accommodate 53,500 spectators. The arena is known for the spectacular view from the north-west stands of the Cerro de la Silla, an iconic mountain peak of 1,820 meters high.
For the Dutch team, this match means a transition from playing under controlled conditions in air conditioning or the rain to a sweltering Mexican open-air stadium. The proximity of the stands to the field, at the minimum distance allowed according to FIFA, ensures that supporters experience the match up close. Previously, group members from the Netherlands have already experienced what it means to play here; Sweden won 5-1 against Tunisia, Japan defeated Tunisia 4-0, and South Africa took three points against South Korea with a narrow 1-0 win.
The stadium received a lot of attention for sustainability during construction in 2011-2015. After protests from the local community, the design was modified to preserve nature and the stadium was awarded a silver certificate in sustainable construction: a first for football stadiums in North America. Vincent Janssen, former Dutch international, played for several seasons for club Monterrey, which has its home base here.
The Netherlands-Morocco match is the last to be played in Monterrey during the 2026 World Cup. It promises to be a special evening for players and fans, surrounded by nature and modern Mexican football culture.
