Motherwell appoint unknown Swedish trainer after departure of Jens Berthel Askou

Motherwell have appointed Alfred Johansson as their new coach, using the same data-driven recruitment strategy that brought his successful predecessor, Jens Berthel Askou, to Fir Park. The 35-year-old Swede comes from Norwegian club Rosenborg, where he was head coach for two and a half years, a period that ended after a difficult start to the current season. Johansson takes over from Askou, who was signed by Toulouse after guiding Motherwell to an impressive fourth-place finish in the Premiership during his prolific first season, marked by attractive football. Chairman Kyrk Macmillan explained the club's decision on the official website: "Following the same data-driven approach we took when appointing the club's previous two managers (Michael Wimmer and Askou), we believe Alfred is an excellent addition to Motherwell." He added: “The data plays a crucial role in ensuring our playing model matches how we want to play and to continue our evolution, but the process is also mixed with ensuring we bring good people to the club.” Macmillan further indicated that Johansson's selection was based on several conversations: "We have met Alfred several times, and he stood out as the best candidate to continue our journey at the club. There is a strong belief that Alfred has the right qualities to lead and realize his ideas. "He is a determined and ambitious young manager who wants to continue the success we had last season." The chairman also acknowledged the timing, noting: "It was important for the selection that we complete our detailed process of recruiting a new manager, but we were also aware of the time. With the players returning this week for pre-season, Alfred can immediately start with his new selection in a busy and exciting period for the club." Johansson himself expressed his enthusiasm: "This is a huge honor for me. Working at and leading this club is a privilege. I have carefully analyzed the club, and the direction we are heading is of great importance to me." He continued: "Last season was hugely successful, and I want to carry that success further. The selection we have is exciting, and we will get to work straight away. There is no time to waste with European football next month and the season starting in just a few weeks." Despite not having a professional playing career, Johansson began coaching in his twenties, initially as a youth coach at Swedish clubs Enkopings and Djurgardens. He later held more prominent academic roles at AIK and Danish club Copenhagen before being appointed to Rosenborg in December 2023 at the age of 33. During his full seasons at Rosenborg, Johansson saw the club finish on fourth and seventh places before being sacked in May when the club found themselves near the bottom of the table after a poor start. His first league match for Motherwell will be a second Conference League qualifying round against Havnar Boltfelag of the Faroe Islands next month.
