Michael Olise shines for France at the 2026 World Cup: modest superstar increasingly important

Michael Olise is currently one of the most talked about players at the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old right winger, who is currently under contract with Bayern Munich, is appreciated for his refined technique, impressive goals and eye for the fellow player, but above all for his modest personality.

Olise, born in London to a French-Algerian mother and a Nigerian father, will represent France at the world championship. Although he could also have chosen England, Nigeria or Algeria, he felt connected to French culture and language from an early age. His rise in professional football had its fair share of challenges: after short spells at Chelsea and Manchester City, he was sent away from both top clubs. After a short stop at Arsenal, he eventually ended up at Reading, where his breakthrough followed.

It was at Reading that Olise really started to flourish. He was known at a young age for his quiet nature and never sought the center of attention. Before the start of the current World Cup, Olise had two very strong seasons, with a total of 25 goals and 28 assists last season at Bayern Munich. At the World Cup he excels as a scorer and even as a goal scorer: Olise is the first player since Thomas Häßler in 1994 to provide five assists in a single World Cup and he is close to equaling Pele's assist record. His performances have already given France a key role in the knockout phase towards the match against Paraguay.

His attitude towards fame and attention is striking. Trainers, fellow players and former teachers confirm that Olise always remains focused on the team result above personal honors. At Reading, for example, he was notorious for his early training and perfectionism, and even on the field he remains reluctant to celebrate successes. Former international Olivier Giroud even speaks of a possible Ballon d'Or candidate, provided the prizes follow.

Whether Olise will actually write world football history partly depends on the further course of the World Cup. However, his modesty does not prevent him from being decisive for France and presenting himself as one of the trendsetters of the tournament.
