Messi misses early penalty but decides game: Argentina beats Austria 2-0 to lead Group J
Argentina remains clear in Group J thanks to a double by Lionel Messi against Austria: 2-0.
Argentina won 2-0 against Austria in the second round of group J at the 2026 World Cup. At the AT&T Stadium in Arlington (Texas, United States), Lionel Messi was the big man with a double, after missing a penalty earlier in the match. Referee Amin Omar from Egypt refereed the game.
After just nine minutes, Argentina had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring. After a foul on Lautaro Martínez, the referee pointed to the spot, but Messi saw his effort turned away from eleven meters. Even before half time, the captain restored order: in the 39th minute, Messi put the world champions at 1-0. In the final phase he finally decided the game by scoring the 2-0 in the 90+5th minute.
After two games, Argentina leads the standings in Group J with six points. Austria follows in second place with three points. In the third round, on June 28, Argentina will meet Jordan. Austria will face Algeria on the same day.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Argentina is the reigning world champion. In the 2022 final, the team defeated France after a 3-3 draw in regular time and extra time, via penalties (4-2).
