Mbappé illustrates world class against Senegal: a lesson in biomechanics and pure strength
With a second goal against Senegal – his 58th for France and 14th in 15 World Cup matches – Kylian Mbappé showed what elite force production looks like at the MetLife Stadium, from core tension to perfect kinetic chain.
At first glance, Kylian Mbappé seemed to be faltering - a fraction later the ball was already in the net. France saw its 2-0 lead against Senegal halved in injury time when the ball fell to Mbappé about thirty yards from goal. From a seemingly impossible position he delivered a devastating blow: Edouard Mendy was unable to reach the score and the score became 3-1. It was Mbappé's second goal of the match, his 58th for France and his 14th in 15 World Cup matches.
What makes the moment special is the image just before ball contact, captured by photographer Lampson Yip at MetLife Stadium. That photo shows what elite power production looks like at top speed. Above the right knee, there is a clear swelling in the quadriceps, the iliotibial band (IT band) is visible along the outside of the thigh, while muscles such as the biceps femoris and vastus lateralis are also clearly defined.
According to Archit Navandar, assistant professor of biomechanics at the Technical University of Madrid, the photo offers a rare glimpse into how one of the world's best athletes generates power with minimal energy losses. “It's not just because he's slim,” says Navandar. "It's the position he is in and the amount of force he delivers. You can clearly see that he has done a lot of targeted strength training. He uses his entire body: his core is activated, he gets momentum from the upper body and he generates enormous power with just a few steps."
One detail stood out for Navandar: the position of Mbappé's right ankle. “The entire lower leg activates in synchrony,” he explains. “The tendons conduct the force; everything works together.” Where most players in such an awkward position would struggle to stay balanced long enough to generate real power, Mbappé hits the ball with barely any contact with the ground. His supporting leg is folded underneath him, the shooting leg is fully extended and the trunk is in rotation.

Performance consultant Daniel Booth, founder of MyoLab and former head of performance at Watford, mainly sees exceptional management in the image. “The contact area between him and the field at the moment of impact is probably no bigger than the palm of your hand,” Booth says. "Most players just hope that everything goes well: they shorten the swing, hold back, protect themselves from falling. That is an automatic reflex. He does not do that. The shooting leg is fully extended, the torso rotates, the arm swings open. He fully commits to the movement with almost nothing underneath him. That is not bravado; that is motor control."
For Booth, this swipe is less about sheer strength than it is about the body trusting an inherently unstable position. “This is the end of a kinetic chain that started before his foot even touched the ball,” he says. "The nervous system trusts that position because he has been there thousands of times. What looks precarious to us is just another moment in the match for him."
Tristan Baker, head of performance at Go Perform and former Reading strength and conditioning coach, explains that a still image can also exaggerate instability. “He's on the move,” Baker says. "That still is part of a flowing action. This is extremely difficult for the average club player: theforce through the supporting leg, the small contact area with the ground — there is a good chance that the supporting leg will collapse if you swing from thirty yards. The fact that he can control that and remains stable on that supporting leg is what makes him so good.”
Experts differ slightly on the details, but the conclusion is identical: where most would make an additional assumption, Mbappé operates on a different level — even on the biggest stage.
