Manchester United takes the next step towards a new 100,000-seat stadium

Manchester United have reached a major milestone in their plans for a new stadium. The English club has purchased a 25-hectare site located between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way, immediately adjacent to the current car parks behind the Stretford End of Old Trafford.

This strategic purchase is a crucial step towards the realization of an ambitious new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 spectators. Since shareholder Jim Ratcliffe presented his vision in March 2025, few concrete developments have been visible, but behind the scenes negotiations about the land have been in full swing.

“This news highlights the progress we are making towards a new, modern home for Manchester United and is an important moment in the further development,” said Collette Roche, CEO of stadium development at Manchester United. “The location close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the club's rich history and traditions. We want to work with the supporters, not just for them, to create a stadium with atmosphere, affordability and accessibility as core values.”


Although the exact cost of the purchased site and details of the financing have not been disclosed, the club recently confirmed a $550 million financing to repay existing bonds. It is unclear whether any of this was used for this land transaction.

Manchester United purchased the site from Indurent, a leading provider of industrial space and part of investment company Blackstone. The club sees opportunities to connect the venue well to public transport via the city-wide Metrolink network and rail, which will allow supporters to easily travel to what is potentially England's largest stadium.

The next concrete step is expected in mid-July; then the draft masterplan for the redevelopment of the Old Trafford area will be presented.
