Liverpool confirm arrival of Jeremy Jacquet
Liverpool have confirmed the transfer of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes. The 20-year-old defender, who is recovering from an injury, is seen as part of a new generation of defenders at the club. With possible departures in defense including Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool are also eyeing Tottenham's Micky van de Ven as an ideal replacement, with a price tag of £100 million.
Liverpool confirmed the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet on Wednesday. The 20-year-old Frenchman arrives for a fee of up to £60 million from Rennes. Despite picking up an injury in February, the France Under-21 international is expected to be fit for pre-season under new coach Andoni Iraola.
Jacquet is part of a new generation of defenders at Liverpool as Richard Hughes looks to secure the defense for the future. Giovanni Leoni was signed from Parma last season for £26 million, and Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe have also recently been added to the squad.
Liverpool have let Ibrahima Konate leave on a free transfer to Real Madrid and are also about to say goodbye to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, possibly as early as next season. This means big changes are coming for Iraq's defense. However, one problem could be the experience. There is no doubting the potential of Jacquet, Leoni and others, but an experienced Premier League player would be useful to guide them through a few seasons.
One candidate available is Micky van de Ven. Tottenham have signed Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, offering an opportunity for Liverpool to complete a deal for the 25-year-old Dutchman. Spurs have experienced some frustration in their attempts to sign Van de Ven to a new contract, as his current deal runs until 2029. Liverpool could benefit from this.
Football Insider confirms that Van de Ven is a serious target for Liverpool, but also warns that Roberto De Zerbi's team are asking for at least £100 million for the defender. “Tottenham Hotspur would demand at least £100 million if Liverpool attempted to complete a spectacular move for Micky van de Ven this summer,” the report said. Van de Ven has been with Spurs since 2023, where he came from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg. He has been on Liverpool's radar for some time, and former head coach Arne Slot previously tried to sign him during his time at AZ and Feyenoord, but Van de Ven opted for another club. Now he seems the ideal solution to the upcoming problem of the departure of Van Dijk, who is under contract until 2027.
