The Dutch national team was eliminated by Morocco after a dramatic penalty shootout in the eighth finals of the 2026 World Cup. After a 1-1 draw, Morocco kept a cool head in the penalty shootout (2-3), allowing the Dutch team to return home early.
The elimination led to a lot of criticism of national coach Ronald Koeman in the Netherlands. Jeroen Kapteijns, journalist for De Telegraaf, has spoken out about Koeman's position as national coach. "Koeman has not achieved any success with the Dutch national team and that is why the criticism from the fans is currently great. He will almost certainly be fired. Moreover, this generation of Dutch national team is not as strong as that of 2008-2010," Kapteijns said in conversation with reporter Alexander Ershov.
Ronald Koeman has again held the position of national coach of the Dutch national team since 2023. The 2026 World Cup will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Argentina is the reigning world champion.
The discussion about Koeman staying on will undoubtedly continue in the coming days, especially now that the tournament for the Dutch team has already ended in the eighth finals.
