Koeman praises Gravenberch's growth: 'He has made great strides in the Dutch team'
Ronald Koeman speaks highly of the development of Ryan Gravenberch, who did not get playing time at the previous European Championship but is now a starting player at the 2026 World Cup. The national coach emphasizes the growth curve of the midfielder and Gravenberch himself still sees plenty of room for personal improvement.
During a press moment, national coach Ronald Koeman expressed his appreciation for the development of Ryan Gravenberch in the run-up to the World Cup match against Tunisia. The 22-year-old midfielder, who did not play a single minute at the European Championship two years ago, is now a regular in the Dutch national team.
Gravenberch, who has now completed two seasons as a starting player at Liverpool, looked back on his remarkable growth: "A lot has changed in the past two years. Due to the confidence and more playing time at my club, I have secured a starting place at the Dutch team. It is special to be able to experience the World Cup as a starting player, at the very highest level."
Gravenberch said about the feeling within the selection: "In Germany during the previous European Championship, the atmosphere and energy in the group was also good, this is no different now."

Koeman clearly sees the progress of his pupil: "Two years ago his situation was completely different. If you play every week, you really develop and that happened at Gravenberch. The move to Liverpool and starting as a starter there have brought him a lot. There are still points on which he can improve, for example in his verbal communication and recognizing situations on the field. But he has made great strides, that is undeniable."
Gravenberch agrees that he can still develop: "I can switch and anticipate better in some game situations, both on the ball and without the ball. As the national coach indicates, there is still scope. But I am proud of my place in the Oranje."
Finally, Gravenberch mentioned how special it is to be part of the selection together with childhood friend Brian Brobbey: "We have known each other since we were seven years old. That bond has always remained and it is great to now be active together at the World Cup."
