Jesús Rodriguez (Como): 'I learned about man coverage in Serie A, which surprised me'

Jesús Rodriguez, Como's most expensive signing, explains how he quickly adapted to Italian football after a quiet start. The winger praises the role of coach Cesc Fàbregas, explains the difference between Spain and Italy and talks about his debut with Spain and his dream of playing in the World Cup.

He was Como's most expensive signing and, after a quiet start, became one of the most interesting wingers in Italy this season. Jesús Rodriguez spoke to the Lega Serie A about his adjustment, ambitions and dreams.

“I see myself as a street football player because as a child I preferred to play in the park and on the street. I learned the most in those conditions,” says Rodriguez. On his departure from Real Betis: "Leaving home was not easy and I hope to return there one day. But fulfilling my dream was always the priority. It hurts to leave family and friends in Seville, but they will always be there when I return."

The choice for Como was well-considered. "The trainer explained the project: young, ambitious and focused on achieving results quickly. We are a very young team that can still improve a lot, but we want to get as far as possible and help the club that gives us the opportunity to grow. The best thing is that we are like a family. There is no jealousy; we help each other. There is competition, but it is healthy."

He is clear about Cesc Fàbregas: "He is approachable and says clearly what he means. That is positive, because you always know what he thinks of you. He gives us a lot of confidence and that helps us to perform optimally."

Rodriguez immediately noticed the biggest difference between Spain and Italy. "In Italy, football is more defensive and physical; in Spain it is more based on tactics and combinations. A typical Italian characteristic is man marking. That surprised me at first, but I think I adapted quickly and well."

His debut with the Spanish national team was a highlight. "When I came onto the pitch, I almost couldn't believe it. I hope to wear my country's shirt often. Imagine replacing the best player in the world - for me that is Lamine Yamal. He is a great teammate and a point of reference. At home in the evenings I watch his videos to improve myself."

Where does he still want to take steps? "Mentally. Playing in front of a large audience every week is not easy: with a bad match you are criticized, with a good one you are suddenly the best. I have to learn to control those feelings. On the field I want to improve in many aspects to become the player I have in mind."

The ultimate dream remains clear. "Playing a World Cup with Spain. To do that, I have to continue to grow as a footballer and always have confidence in myself, so that I can show it on the field every week."
