Jesse Marsch makes history with Canada: first ever World Cup knockout phase after loss to Switzerland

Canada has qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, despite a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. National coach Jesse Marsch praises the heart and commitment of his team and looks forward to the remainder of the tournament, in which Alphonso Davies is expected to return.

History has been written for the Canadian national team. Led by Jesse Marsch, the team has qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time ever, despite a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland. While there was great disappointment after the final whistle, pride ultimately prevailed among players, staff and supporters of the Canadians.

Marsch has managed to transform the Canadian team from a traditional ice hockey country into a team with a true football culture and, above all, a lot of belief in its own abilities. That self-confidence was visible throughout the tournament and now resulted in a prestigious milestone.

“We have a huge heart, and we never stop,” Marsch said after the game. "Everyone is so committed to the national team and to each other. As a coach, I am very proud of that. This should be a starting point for a convincing start to the next round in Los Angeles."

Switzerland, known as one of the complete teams at this World Cup, proved to be a difficult opponent. Yet Marsch was realistic about the balance of forces from the start. "We knew that this team was stronger and more experienced. For us, the goal is bigger than just this match: we want to make a real bid for success, because we believe in this group."

Injuries affected Canada in the group stage. Marsch acknowledged that it is difficult to get everyone available, but did have good news: captain and star player Alphonso Davies is expected fit for the next meeting.

"We've had some bad luck with injuries, but Alphonso Davies will be ready for the next game. That's a positive signal for the whole team. Everyone here is giving everything for the honor of Canada."

An opponent from Group A awaits in the eighth finals: South Korea, the Czech Republic or South Africa. Canada will have to enter with the fittest possible selection if the fairytale wants to continue.

“It is an honor to lead this national team,” concludes Marsch. “We are going to Los Angeles to give it our all and deliver our best performance ever.”
