Javad Nekounam closes chapter at Esteghlal after

According to Varzesh3.

Background

Javad Nekounam, who previously played a prominent role at Esteghlal as a player and coach, now has the challenge of leading Tractor to success. His experience and knowledge of the Liga Pro Iran could be crucial to the development of his new team, especially given the rivalry with his former club.

Why this matters

The defeat against Al Sadd marks a disappointing end for Javad Nekounam at Esteghlal, a club that had high expectations for the season. His departure, after a period full of internal conflicts and sporting setbacks, has significant consequences for the future of the team in the Liga Pro Iran. Esteghlal must now quickly appoint a new coach to break the negative spiral and improve the season outlook.

Javad Nekounam's farewell as coach of Esteghlal was no fairy tale. The Iranian, who had been in charge of the team from Tehran since the summer of 2023, was last on the sidelines as head coach on 9 Mehr 1403 (early October 2024). At the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Nekounam was disappointed to see Esteghlal lose 2-0 to Al Sadd from Qatar.

The match was marked by individual errors: goalkeeper Seyed Hossein Hosseini blundered with the first goal and then even scored an unfortunate own goal. In the second half, Rouzbeh Cheshmi caused a penalty on Akram Afif, who then scored the 2-0 himself. Earlier that week, Nekounam had offered his resignation in writing after losing a city derby. However, Esteghlal club management refused his departure due to the short time until the important Asian clash. The board only decided to make a final decision after the match with Al Sadd and left Nekounam on the bench one more time in Doha.

After the final whistle, Nekounam confirmed in the press conference what many already suspected: his decision to resign had been made. According to the trainer, staying was no longer an option, with a view to the well-being of the club. This definitively ended his coaching period at Esteghlal.

Nekounam's first season at Esteghlal had a positive start: the team remained in the race for the championship until the final matchdays. However, his period was increasingly marked by tensions behind the scenes. The conflict with then general manager Ali Khateer in particular played a major role. Discussions about budget, transfers, salary payments and the appointment of desired reinforcements became heated. What started as an internal dispute eventually became fodder for the media and public debate. Nekounam accused the club management of providing insufficient resources for a title hunt, while Khateer always pointed to the financial limitations.

After Khateer left there was no peace. The new season started slowly, including the lossin de derby en een teleurstellend resultaat in Azië.
