Historical scoop: Katia García is the first woman to lead a World Cup match for the Dutch team
Katia García will be in charge of Tunisia - Netherlands on Friday, making her the first woman to referee a World Cup match for the Dutch team. The 33-year-old Mexican made his debut earlier at this tournament as a fourth official and will now have her first match as head referee. The Dutch team has four points after two World Cup matches, but placement is not yet certain.
For the first time in history, a Dutch World Cup match will be led by a woman. Mexican referee Katia García will be in charge of the match between Tunisia and the Netherlands on Friday.
The 33-year-old García made her debut at this World Cup as the fourth official for the Netherlands - Japan (2-2) and then also served as the fourth official for England - Croatia. Now she will receive her first appointment as head referee at the world tournament.
It is a first for both García and the Dutch team: never before has a woman refereed a World Cup match for the Dutch national team. A female leader is not completely new at Oranje. In 2021, Stéphanie Frappart was in charge of the Netherlands – Latvia (2-0) in the World Cup qualifying. The American Alyssa Pennington recently led the friendly match against Uzbekistan (2-1).
The Dutch team has four points after two World Cup matches. The team of national coach Ronald Koeman therefore has good credentials for the next round, but placement is not yet final.
