Haaland decides thriller: Norway passes Ivory Coast via 1-2, Brazil awaits in New York
Norway beats Ivory Coast 1-2 thanks to a late goal from Erling Haaland and meets Brazil in the eighth finals in New York.
Erling Haaland has shot Norway to the eighth finals of the World Cup with a late goal. Ivory Coast seemed to force at least an extension for a long time, but in the final phase the striker still struck: 1-2. As a result, the Norwegians will face Brazil in New York.
It was obvious that Norway looked fresher than Ivory Coast: national coach Stale Solbakken gave strongmen Haaland and Martin Ødegaard a rest in the last group match against France. Ivory Coast was also able to save some strength in the meeting with Curaçao due to the position in the group. However, in the opening phase, that extra rest did not pay off for Norway. Ivory Coast dictated the game at times, without creating huge opportunities. The Norwegians did score just before half time. Antonio Nusa curled the ball beautifully into the far corner: 0-1.
After the break, Ivory Coast accelerated again, while Norway failed to double the margin halfway through the second half. Ødegaard had an unmissable opportunity, but substitute Amad Diallo cleared his effort off the line.
Diallo also showed off his attacking qualities a little later. After a clever dribble and tight finish, the Manchester United attacker made it 1-1, which he celebrated enthusiastically.
But then there is always the Haaland phenomenon. A few minutes before regular time expired, the striker scored his fifth goal of the tournament. He didn't have to do much: Patrick Berg's cross was unmissable, although Haaland didn't even hit the ball perfectly. It turned out to be enough for the winner: 1-2.
In injury time, Norway had to survive another perilous moment, when a free kick from Diallo flew towards the intersection. Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland cleverly knocked the ball out of the goal and secured the victory.
Norway will meet Brazil in the round of 16 on Sunday, July 5. The match in New York starts at 10:00 PM Dutch time. The Norwegians will bring back fond memories of 1998, when they won 1-2 against Brazil in the group stage at the World Cup in France and qualified for the knockout phase.
