Gilmour injured, Scotland 'fan': “A new trainer is coming at Napoli”

Billy Gilmour will miss the 2026 World Cup with a knee injury but is in the US to support Scotland. The Napoli midfielder speaks about the support of teammates and expects a new coach at his club, with Allegri named.

Scotland is back at a World Cup after 28 years, but without Billy Gilmour. In the run-up to the tournament, the Napoli midfielder suffered a knee injury during the friendly match against Curaçao and was therefore not selected. Yet the 25-year-old Scot has traveled to the United States to support the national team as a supporter.

In an interview on the Scottish national team's YouTube channel, Gilmour explained why he still wants to be there: “This is the second best thing you can do, so I wanted to be here.” About his situation at his club, he said: “At my club there is a new coach (Allegri), I am also looking forward to that, but the most important thing was to be here with the team.”

Gilmour praised the way the group looked after him after his injury. "Everyone has been fantastic, including the head coach (Clarke) and the staff. The players are constantly texting me to ask how things are going. Sometimes you just want to be left alone, but their texts and calls can really make your day. We have great guys in the squad who always look out for the younger players, especially when injured."

The midfielder also sought support from fellow internationals who experienced something similar. "I've spoken to Lewis Ferguson and Kenny McLean; they've had similar situations around the European Championships. It's good to hear their stories and understand how you come back from an injury like that."

Despite the disappointment, Gilmour clearly enjoys the unique atmosphere surrounding the tournament. "My dream remains to reach a World Cup and play there, but being here among the fans, with my family, and seeing everything besides football is incredible. I really, really enjoyed myself. Boston is a fantastic city, the people are so friendly and you see fans everywhere having a great time. That puts a smile on your face."

The support of the fans touches him. "I've received loads of get well wishes, in the hotel and even in shops when I'm just passing by. It's fantastic to be honest. The fans are very respectful and in a great mood, as they should be. I can't thank the Scottish supporters enough for all the support."
