Gakpo joins Messi and Mbappé with unique World Cup streak
After his goal against Morocco, Cody Gakpo is one of only three players with at least three goals at both the 2022 and 2026 World Cup, alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
The elimination of the Dutch team against Morocco not only meant the end of the tournament for the Netherlands, but also provided Cody Gakpo with a special chapter in World Cup history. Because of his goal, the attacker joins an extremely select list: only three players managed to score at least three times in both the 2022 and 2026 World Cup. In addition to Gakpo, these are Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
No other player has scored at least three goals per edition in the last two World Cup tournaments. In theory, more names could be added, but the Liverpool striker has already secured his place in this elite group.
Gakpo's goal against Morocco also gave Gakpo six World Cup goals for the Dutch team. With this he equals a series of Dutch greats: Dennis Bergkamp, Wesley Sneijder, Rob Rensenbrink, Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie. In the Dutch team's all-time World Cup top scorers list, only John Rep is now above him, with seven goals spread over the 1974 and 1978 tournaments.
