Famalicão wants to keep Van de Looi longer, while Championship clubs beckon

Tom van de Looi (26) is facing an interesting summer at FC Famalicão. Over the past two seasons, the Dutch midfielder has developed into a certainty in the sub-top of the Portuguese league and has attracted the interest of several clubs. Two clubs from the Championship have signed up for the former youth international. Moreover, Sporting Braga is closely monitoring his situation.

Famalicão would like to sign Van de Looi for longer and is working on breaking his current contract, which runs until mid-2027. There is no agreement yet. The club realizes that a choice has to be made this summer: extend or possibly sell to collect a transfer fee, now that the market interest is concrete.


Van de Looi grew into a stronghold in midfield in the shelter. With the Dutchman as a permanent fixture, Famalicão even finished fifth, directly behind the established top (FC Porto, Sporting Portugal, Benfica and Sporting Braga). The controlling midfielder thus put himself firmly in the spotlight.

The 26-year-old Van de Looi settled in Famalicão in mid-2024, which took him over from the Italian Brescia. In the Netherlands he previously wore the shirt of FC Groningen and NEC. Whether he continues his Portuguese adventure with an improved contract, or whether he moves to England, will be an important issue this transfer summer.
